Accounting Controller – Real Estate Asset & Property Management

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Accounting Controller to oversee financial operations across our real estate portfolio, including asset management and property management functions. The ideal candidate will have strong accounting expertise, leadership skills, and experience managing the financial reporting, budgeting, and operational accounting processes for residential and multifamily real estate assets.

This role will play a key part in maintaining financial accuracy, improving operational efficiency, supporting investment performance, and helping guide strategic financial decisions across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations related to real estate assets and property management portfolios

  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes

  • Prepare and review financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports

  • Monitor property performance, operating expenses, budgets, and financial forecasts

  • Supervise accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and general ledger activities

  • Coordinate rent roll reporting, CAM reconciliations, and tenant financial tracking where applicable

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP standards, internal controls, and financial policies

  • Assist ownership and executive leadership with asset performance analysis and investment reporting

  • Coordinate audits, tax preparation, and communication with external accountants and financial partners

  • Develop and improve accounting systems, financial controls, and operational procedures

  • Work closely with property managers, asset managers, and operations teams to ensure accurate reporting and financial performance

  • Support acquisitions, refinancing, budgeting, and capital improvement planning initiatives

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • CPA designation preferred

  • 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably within real estate, property management, or asset management

  • Strong understanding of real estate accounting principles and financial reporting

  • Experience managing accounting operations for multifamily and/or commercial properties

  • Proficiency in accounting and property management software such as Yardi, AppFolio, QuickBooks, MRI, or similar platforms

  • Advanced Excel and financial analysis skills

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and leadership abilities

  • Ability to manage multiple entities, projects, and deadlines simultaneously

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with multifamily real estate portfolios

  • Knowledge of property operations, budgeting, and asset performance analysis

  • Familiarity with real estate acquisitions, financing, and investor reporting

  • Experience implementing accounting systems and process improvements

  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate cross-functionally with executive leadership and operations teams

Schedule & Compensation

  • Full-time in-person in Newark, NJ
  • Compensation based on experience
